Agriculture, Nutrition, and Garden Departments. Our mission is to cultivate a nourishing environment where every child has access to wholesome, locally-sourced nutrition. Through the thoughtful integration of livestock rearing and produce cultivation, we aim to provide our school community with fresh, sustainable, and nutritious food options. Our commitment extends beyond mere sustenance; we endeavor to educate our students about the importance of responsible farming practices, instilling in them a deeper understanding of food systems and fostering a lifelong appreciation for healthy eating habits. Through hands-on learning and engagement, we aspire to instill a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of food, health, and the environment, nurturing a culture of wellness and sustainability.
We are currently in our growing season! Fruit and vegetable plants are being planted by elementary students with the guidance of our Garden Coordinator, Jessica Johnson. All elementary students receive weekly hands on garden instruction and have worked hard to understand a garden ecosystem, understand our local climate, and have directly made decisions on what foliage would best grow and strive in our beautiful garden (located behind The Cottage). The resulting bounties will be used to help sustain the Child Nutrition Program.
Through the hard work of our Agriculture Department, the pig pens have be built! We are excited for the arrival of local piglets in the early part of April. Our pigs will be weighed and monitored by our high school agriculture classes. This is an excellent opportunity for them to experience livestock husbandry first hand. The pork harvested through this endeavor will go back to feed our students and maybe even a community BBQ!
This is just the beginning of our vision and the amazing opportunities that the Prescott Sustainability Program have in store for our students!
